Annual World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), which is celebrated around the world on 17th May each year helps to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. Every year since 1969, ITU celebrates the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which marks the founding of ITU on 17 May 1865 when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris.
This year’s theme, “Digital transformation in the least developed countries (LDC)” will represent a unique opportunity for the ITU membership, partners, and other stakeholders to raise awareness of the important role of telecommunications/ICTs because the world’s least developed countries are threatened by a deepening digital divide; a decade of halting progress on connectivity therefore investment in these young, vibrant countries can drive sustainable growth for generations.
To promote this year theme IAFI is celebrating this event in concurrence with ITU to encourage success stories, good practices, solutions, and policies designed to meet present and future challenges of LDCs.
ITU-APT Foundation of India is sector Member of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), ITU Development Sector (ITU-D) and ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU- T) and affiliate Member of Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) which manifests its usefulness to the Indian Telecom industry. The Foundation members are entitled to participate and contribute to the activities of ITU-R, ITU-D, ITU-T and APT.
